R. Kelly was arrested Thursday night (July 12) in Chicago on federal sex crime charges.

In one case, prosecutors said Kelly paid an unidentified person $170,000 to cancel a news conference in which the person had planned to announce he had tapes of Kelly engaging in sexual activity with minors.

R. Kelly said: "I'll sit here and say this, I had two cases back then that I said at the beginning of the interview that I would not talk about because of my ongoing case now".

Chicago - R. Kelly, already facing sexual abuse charges brought by IL prosecutors, was arrested in Chicago on a sweeping federal indictment. He is being held at a federal detention center in Chicago, where he'll remain at least until a Monday hearing.

Cook County prosecutors file new sexual assault charges against singer R. Kelly.

Kelly has pleaded not guilty to the IL charges.

The disgraced singer's attorney, Steve Greenberg, released a statement Friday morning about Kelly's latest arrest.

Both the U.S. Attorney for Northern District of IL and the Southern District of NY are reportedly involved in the case. "Kelly will appear in federal court in Brooklyn at a later date".

Kelly has denied abuse allegations for a number of years. He had previously been prosecuted by IL authorities in a child pornography case, but in June 2008, Kelly was acquitted of all charges. Those charges include child pornography, sexual exploitation of children, conspiracy to defraud the United States and obstruction of justice.

R. Kelly faces 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse for alleged abuses of four women from 1998 to 2010.

Johnson said that Kelly was now being held in Cook County, Illinois. Kelly, 52, whose real name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, has pleaded not guilty. "My office was pleased to work together to secure these charges and will continue to work with our colleagues in the pursuit of justice for all victims".

Associated Press writers Amanda Seitz in Chicago and Ben Nadler in Atlanta contributed. Kelly faces 30 years in prison for each count of the aggravated criminal sexual assault charges.
