Yet instead of acknowledging climate change as a problem, Trump renewed his attacks on the Paris Agreement, calling it unfair to the US.

The meeting represented an escalation of his battle with companies like Facebook, Google and even his preferred communications outlet, Twitter.

"From day one, my administration has made it a top priority to ensure that America is among the very cleanest air and cleanest water on the planet", he said on Monday in a speech at the White House, Efe news reported.

The Pew survey found that despite the overall support for the president, a significant number of veterans have reservations about Trump's leadership - concerns that were magnified when researchers looked at the veterans' political leanings.

"We enforce the Twitter Rules impartially for all users, regardless of their background or political affiliation", a Twitter spokesperson said.

Billionaire Bernie Marcus, 90, who co-founded Home Depot in 1979, recently said he would be giving most of his wealth to charity but would also continue to support Trump's campaign after contributing $7 million in 2016. "Where everybody can have free and open speech".

Thursday's conference raised questions about whether Trump would use the forum to signal tough actions ahead by his administration against the big companies in the areas of competition and privacy. A bipartisan push for new data privacy legislation has emerged in Congress. Regulators at the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission are pursuing antitrust investigations of Facebook, Google, Apple and Amazon.

"No private company should be browbeaten by the government into giving a pass to objectionable content that violates company policies", CCIA president Ed Black said in a statement. "A changing climate is making it harder to protect human health", it said.

Tom Steyer, the billionaire investor and activist, said Tuesday he's joining the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, reversing course after deciding earlier this year that he would forgo a run.

Right-wing social media accounts like @CarpeDunktum, which created a viral meme, retweeted by Trump, of Democrats crying during the State of the Union - later deleted by Twitter - and Bill Mitchell, who has promoted conspiracy theories like QAnon on his Twitter account, also will be in attendance. "Hopefully these companies can self-correct".

For years we've watched social media serve as a gateway to radicalisation and, far too often, real-life violence. In March, Trump had expressed angsts in a tweet saying, "Facebook, Google and Twitter, not to mention the Corrupt Media, are sooo on the side of the Radical Left Democrats".

"There has never been a president who has actively pursued an agenda so hostile to the environment and public health at the behest of polluters than Mr Trump", he said.

Veterans are more likely than the general public to think Trump respects the US' military veterans - 30% of the overall population said he respects them a great deal, compared to nearly half of veterans (48%).
