South Africa's Thembinkosi Lorch stunned thousands of home fans into silence with his 85th minute goal.

Egypt head coach Javier Aguirre was sacked and the whole coaching team was dismissed before Abo Rieda announced his resignation.

South Africa delivered the biggest upset at the Africa Cup of Nations after eliminating hosts Egypt, defeating Pharaohs 1-0 in the round of 16 to book a place in the quarterfinals.

Nigeria ousted the holders and their bitter rivals Cameroon from the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring twice in three minutes to come from behind and win a thrilling last-16 match 3-2 on Saturday.

Egypt eased into the knockout stages with three wins from three but have yet to hit top gear in their quest for a record-extending eighth Cup of Nations title.

The Liverpool player has two goals from the group stages and Aguirre rejected suggestions his side have not scored enough goals after winning 1-0, 2-0 and 2-0.

"We are all feeling bad because of our exit and I am the one responsible for the loss".

"Challenging the players and showing them the movements we wanted to make was something we fixed".

"I think we could have scored more, Lars [Veldwijk] got a chance and the keeper [Mohamed El Shenaway] saved it, even with Percy, but yeah I think it was a good game". "I think we did it very well".

"If we didn't play well for the first few games, the coach [Baxter] told us to just be positive and encourage each other and keep playing for one another".

South Africa, who squeezed through qualification to the competition after draws with Libya and Seychelles, were widely expected to be brushed aside in the capital.

Both teams finished second in their groups and had not been in the best of form and it showed with an abundance of defensive mistakes but there was also much to admire in an end-to-end match.
