The first ever monument of Melania Trump, set in the fields near town of Sevnica, US First Lady's hometown.

The likeness of Melania Trump has been carved in wood in her native Slovenia.

A very odd statue of Melania Trump has been erected near her hometown of Sevnica in Slovenia, but the perplexing wooden creation isn't a very flattering tribute to the first lady.

But not everyone has taken a liking to the new statue.

Several local residents of Melania's home town said that the statue was "ridiculous", but many agreed that it was good for attracting tourists to this sleepy Slovenian town.

United States artist Brad Downey hired a neighborhood chainsaw artisan, Ales Zupevc, to reduce the likeness out of a tree trunk.

The rustic figure was cut from the trunk of a linden tree, showing her in a pale blue dress like the one she wore at Donald Trump's presidential inauguration. "I can understand why people might think that this falls short as a description of her physical appearance", Downey, 39, tells AFP of the work that some compare to a scarecrow.

He commissioned local artist Ales Zupevc to carve the sculpture.

Mr Zupevc was born in the same hospital in the same month as Mrs Trump and said the piece highlights the differences in their lives.

"You know what makes her resemble Melania?"

"If the monument was meant to be a parody, then the artist has been successful", Nika, a local 24-year-old architecture student, told AFP.

Some residents described it as "a disgrace", a "Smurfette", asserting "it would no longer discover the leisure fancy Melania".
