"I wanted to keep it interesting", Morgan said of her celebration. In the semifinal on Tuesday, also from Lyon, the United States defeated England 2-1.

England were knocked out at the semifinals for the second tournament in a row but have the opportunity to finish third again in the play-off match in Nice on Saturday.

Sue Bird, Rapinoe's girlfriend and WNBA star, also wrote a Players' Tribune article titled "So The President F*ucking Hates My Girlfriend" on Tuesday morning where she praises Rapinoe's strong will and gives her perspective of the situation.

She also called watching from the sidelines "terrible", adding: "I always say this about our friends and family who are here, it's very bad for them because they have so much invested and you have no way to expend all this anxiety that you have, stressed out about the game". I would never be able to do this in a lot of other places.

But Neville already knows how England will respond to a game that means little in the grand scheme, but important for the team's character. The biggest performance, though, came from US goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, whose save on a late penalty kick preserved the lead en route to the tight victory. The U.S. will play the victor of tomorrow's semifinal: Sweden/Netherlands.

The Lionesses' progress to the World Cup semi-final has captured the nation's hearts, despite an agonising defeat to favourites US on Tuesday night. Christen can run up and down the sideline forever: she's fit, she's fast, and she scores goals. But there were defensive frailties on occasion and some alarming drops in form by some of the key attackers.

While the decision seems controversial if she is healthy, it could simply be the best choice when playing a team like England.

England lacked a player capable of grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck in midfield and their potency down the right flank, so prominent in the quarter-final win over Norway, vanished in Neville's changed formation. Neville however claimed to have shelved the disappointment immediately, clicking into auto-pilot as the guardian of England's future success. You sense England is getting there, but it's still a work in progress. Sweden are the reigning Olympic silver medalists and the Netherlands are the reigning European champions. But my players don't want to hear that any more.

Though challenged by the world's finest teams in the knockouts, the USWNT remains firmly on its perch. And considering his message before the tourney started, it's a good question. But there are signs the World Cup has had a tangible effect, with 20,000 tickets sold for England's friendly against Germany in November.

In 2015, reaching the last four was new and unexpected - England overachieved and left Canada with smiles and bronze medals.

They had scored no later than the 12th minute in all of their previous five matches, and here they required only 10 minutes to take the lead here, Heath finding Kelley O'Hara whose cross was headed in by Press at the far post.

Winning is the only metric that matters in sports, Neville told them.
