And with that tweet, Trump found himself historically stepping across the North and South Korean border on Sunday, into the Korean Demilitarized Zone, shaking hands with Kim before they held an hour-long meeting together (their third in person) in the Freedom House at the DMZ, CNN reported.

President Donald Trump meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

"Stepping across that line was a great honor", Trump said. "While there, if Chairman Kim of North Korea sees this, I would meet him at the Border/DMZ just to shake his hand and say Hello (?)!"

President Trump visits the DMZ ahead of a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Lee Seok-hyun, a senior lawmaker from Moon's party, said on Twitter on Saturday that Moon and Trump will likely join Kim on Sunday for a three-way gathering in the Joint Security Area (JSA) within the DMZ.

"It's a great day for the world and it's an honour for me to be here", Trump said.

A February summit in Hanoi collapsed without an agreement and contact between the two countries was minimal in the immediate aftermath.

He becomes the first serving American president to step into the country.

Trump also said that teams from the U.S. and North Korea would start meetings "over the next two or three weeks" for talks on Pyongyang's nuclear program.

The North Korean government has scoffed at the Blue House's attempts to act as an intermediary in negotiations between Mr Trump and Mr Kim, which the USA hopes will lead to Pyongyang relinquishing its nuclear arms.

Kim Jong-un also added that he and Trump "have created a precedent where we can meet at any time we want without being restrained to venue and format".

The two would "just shake hands quickly and say hello because we haven't seen each other since Vietnam", Trump said earlier.

The 250km-long, 4km-wide DMZ is a symbol of division after the halt of the 1950-53 Korean War, which saw the USA aiding the South while China supported the North.

Clapper, however, expressed his doubt that Pyongyang is interested in any real deal involving the nuclear weapons program.

Ivanka Trump said she would "absolutely" enter North Korea with her father. "I believe that this will have a positive influence in all our discussions in the future", Kim said.

Officials spent Sunday morning working out logistical and security details, Trump said during an earlier appearance with Moon.

"I would invite him right now", Trump said.

Moon also met Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss peace in the Korean peninsula.

"Continued dialogue is very practical and the only method to bring about peace on the Korean Peninsula", added the South Korean president.

And he's chastising reporters, saying "they have no appreciation for" for changes in the North, which he's calling a "very different place".

Standing next to Trump after the U.S. president crossed the border, Kim noted the historic value of the meeting.
