At G20, Xi leads chorus for multilateralism — Xinhua Headlines

The G20 countries adopted a Leaders' Declaration today in Osaka.

The G20 leaders will release the communique after they wrap up their two-day meeting on Saturday. "Free and open economy is a cornerstone of peace and prosperity. We reiterate our support for tax capacity building in developing countries", the declaration said.

The G20 did manage to agree on tackling plastic trash in the ocean. The two did not formally meet, but were spotted having discussions on the margins of the gathering - "constructive interactions", in the words of the Prime Minister's Office. "It's also smart economic and defence policy", Ivanka Trump said at an event here on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 Summit.

North Korea's First Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui responded by saying it was a "very interesting suggestion", and the meeting, if realized, would serve as "another meaningful occasion in further deepening the personal relations between the two leaders and advancing the bilateral relations".

"We've said it before - communication and friction between China and the United States is a long-term, hard and complex thing".

Trump has at times found himself at odds with other leaders in such global events. This, he said, included the promotion of free trade, global health, climate change and women's empowerment.


"If the hostility had persisted for some time, India could have benefited due to deflection of some trade due to the tension between US-China", said Biswajit Dhar, professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The members represent more than 65 percent of the world's population, nearly 80 percent of the gross world product, and 75 percent of global trade.

Trump said, "don't meddle in the election".

Trump said existing USA tariffs would remain in place against Chinese imports while negotiations continue, but that additional tariffs he's threatened to slap on billions worth of other Chinese goods will not be triggered for the "time being".

According to a Reuters report, Xi is said to have conveyed to Trump about fairer trade and business treatments for Chinese organisations.

It's unclear, however, if they have overcome the obstacles that brought the talks to a halt earlier.

However, in direct response to a question about any possibility of Washington withdrawing from the pact, the U.S. president answered, "No, I'm not thinking about that at all". "We had to quickly study the issues involved with this late addition to the G20 Osaka agenda".

He added: "I would like to communicate a strong message: Without the cooperation of the United States and Japan, such work wouldn't be possible". Trump said he would not preview his response should Iran top that limit, but said, "We can not let Iran have a nuclear weapon". Abe's ruling Liberal Democratic Party has suffered several setbacks in by-elections and his long tenure as prime minister is raising questions about who will succeed him.

At the Osaka summit they will be joined by leaders from guest nations the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Vietnam and Thailand in its role as the president of trade bloc Asean, Egypt in its role as African Union president and Chile as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group's president. This sets the direction for world economic and global governance cooperation.

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, European Union, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Republic of Korea, South Africa, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the US, Chile, Egypt, Estonia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Senegal, Singapore, Spain and Vietnam are members of the G20 bloc.
