It was not immediately clear how numerous company's 1,850 US stores were affected, though shoppers reported outages in several states, including Iowa, California, Minnesota and NY.

In a tweet from one of its official accounts, Target said that it was "aware of a systems issue in store and are working as quickly as possible to get this fixed".

"Our teams are troubleshooting now and we apologize for the inconvenience", the message read.

The Washington post reported that shoppers were taking to social media to post pictures of long lines in Target stores.

"All the registers at #Target are down nationwide but we're making the most of it", posted Dan Clemens on Twitter.

The company responded to customer complaints about the outage at 1:18 p.m. Saturday.

He added that the store pick-up service was still working, so customers can purchase products that way.

An employee from the Super Target located at Sawgrass Mills in Sunrise confirmed the store's cashier system was down for about two hours.

Guests were able to purchase their merchandise again in all stores following the temporary outage earlier that was the result of an internal technology issue.

Sunday night Target's registers were fully back online, the company said in a statement.

Target customers were forced to wait several hours on Saturday as a glitch caused registers from coast to coast to shut down. ". I walked in, they apologized profusely, and handed me coupons".
