Modi Makes No Mention of Chandrababu in His AP Visit

Like in the early days of Chandrababu Naidu after 2014 elections, the Prime Minister offered complete co-operation to the new government in Andhra Pradesh in facing the Bifurcation Challenges.

Maldives on Saturday conferred its highest honour accorded to foreign dignitaries - Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen - on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "India stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka", said Modi, the first foreign leader to visit Sri Lanka after the Easter attacks on April 21.

Modi is scheduled to hold talks with Sirisena.

Upon reaching the Republic of Maldives, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, "This visit indicates the importance India attaches to strong ties with the Republic of Maldives and the desire to boost cooperation in various spheres".

"Since both Sri Lanka and India have been victims of terrorism, both the leaders condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and chose to step up cooperation in this critical area", Sri Lanka's presidential office said in a statement.

The hours-long stop in Sri Lanka was part of Modi's first overseas trip after winning a second term.

During the visit, Modi signed a slew of agreements with the island nation encompassing ferry services, port terminals and a new national cricket stadium.


The Maldives, an archipelago of more than 1,000 tiny coral islands, and Sri Lanka straddle the world's busiest east-west maritime route.

"Had an extensive meeting with the Leader of Opposition, Mahinda Rajapaksa". "With their contribution and support, I am confident we can give a new direction to the country", he said. "My father congratulated Mr. Modi on his election win and emphasised that stability at the Centre in India was good not just for India, but for the entire region".

PM Modi also said that it was essential to boost action on Climate change. Apart from the Sri Lankan PM, he was accompanied by Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith.

India has always been a first responder to Sri Lanka's needs and priorities.

Later, shifting gears from diplomacy to domestic politics, Mr. Modi addressed Colombo-based Indian community and thanked the people of India for a big mandate. "May the friendship between India and Maldives last forever".

China's influence in Sri Lanka makes India anxious because New Delhi considers the Indian Ocean region to be its strategic backyard.
