Ben Affleck's official departure left a Batman-sized hole in the DC cinematic universe and recent news that ex-Twilight star Robert Pattinson was donning the cowl in Affleck's wake caused quite a lot of buzz on the internet.

CNBC reported that the studio confirmed that Pattinson is in negotiations for the part.

Warner Bros has approved Robert Pattinson as the star of The Batman, the trilogy of films that Matt Reeves will direct later this year, Deadline hears.

"Phillips' exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale", teases Warner Bros.

The film will begin production this summer.

While there were those who disapproved of Pattinson as Batman, there were others who were all for the decision. He is now filming Tenet, the new film from a director with much Batman history of his own - The Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan.

The film is expected to start pre-production this summer and is now slated to hit theaters on June 25, 2021.

Robert Pattinson reacts during a news conference at the 70 Cannes Festival in Cannes, France, May 25, 2017.

What do you think of Robin and The Riddler appearing in Matt Reeves' The Batman?

But the studio was reportedly torn between him and Nicholas Hoult. "This would be the worst casting ever for the dark knight", the petition reads.

That refers to the controversy behind Ben Affleck taking over the role in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice", "Suicide Squad" and "Justice League" - a selection that did not go over well with some DC Comics devotees.

Shooting is set to start in the first quarter of 2020.
