Weekly Golf Preview - Memorial Tournament

The 43-year-old needs one more victory to match Sam Snead's record 82 wins on the PGA Tour, though perhaps more importantly the Memorial offers Woods a chance to assess his form heading to the US Open at Pebble Beach in two weeks' time.

Day's record has bemused Nicklaus, who previous year said he was surprised the talented Australian had not enjoyed more success.

Leader Moore said a par at the first hole had set a positive tone that primed him to run off five birdies in rapid-fire fashion. Woods has been dominant at Muirfield Village throughout his career and has won the Memorial on five occasions.

Former world No.1 Day lives within 30 minutes of host venue Muirfield Village Golf Club - and is a member at the course - but he has only ever posted one top-25 result from 10 starts.

Woods' other previous Memorial Tournament wins included first round scores of 68, 71, 68 and 69. He went into a playoff with Kyle Stanley and Byeong-Hun An after they all tied with a score of -15.

As he plays predominantly for Major titles at this point, it's fair to question whether he'll be focused on Muirfield or preparing exclusively for Pebble Beach and the US Open.

"My record is slowly getting better and I hope to change that this year". Add on Matt Kuchar, reigning champion Bryson DeChambeau, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Rory McIlroy, Phil, Mickelson, Justin Rose, and Jordan Spieth and this is most certainly a star-studded field.

Further down I would be looking for someone like Charley Hoffman to put in a good show at quite long odds. "I've got to start feeling a little bit better first before that happens". The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, designed by Dye, is often credited with introducing the concept of stadium golf, but Muirfield Village predates TPC Sawgrass by two years.

With just one finish outside of the top 10 in 10 tournaments this season, McIlroy comes in as the betting favorite once again.

"Obviously, Muirfield Village stands alone as something that means a great deal to me", he said a couple years ago. But he putted his way into a tie for third at Bethpage Black and then backed it up with a tie for eighth at last weekend's Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas.

Finau has played the Memorial four times, making the cut each time and finishing in the top 15 three times. That includes the PGA Championship.
