Amazon challenges Google with smaller, cheaper Echo Show

In the process, it might make the Echo Show 5 more appealing to those who would like an Alexa smart display on their nightstand, but who have been dissuaded by the thought of the virtual assistant inadvertently watching them.

One new feature added with the Echo Show 5 is what Amazon calls "Alexa Sunrise" alarm.

Echo Show 5 is available in Charcoal and Sandstone for £79.99. Amazon says new commands like "Alexa, delete everything I said today" and future options like "Alexa, delete what I just said", will allow users to erase records of recent interactions with the voice assistant. Because it has a screen, it can show lyrics via Amazon Music.

'Simply say, "Alexa, delete everything I said today" and the respective recordings will be deleted, ' Amazon said.

Depending on where you are in the world, you can now access TV and video through the Echo Show from the likes of Prime Video, NBC, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, and more - some of these are available via Alexa skills, while others like YouTube will need to be accessed via the Show's browser.

Like previous Echo Show devices, the Echo Show 5 is compatible with a range of smart home gadgets including the Arlo baby camera and Ring doorbell cameras.

The device does address Alexa privacy concerns - there's a shutter to close off the front-facing HD camera.

The device is available for pre-order starting Wednesday and will begin shipping in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and Australia next month and to India in July, Amazon said.

From a privacy perspective, the Echo Show 5 includes a microphone/camera off button and a built-in camera shutter. You can control your smart home devices using a new dashboard that's coming to all Echo Show devices, and manage them by group.

Previously, Alexa users had to log in to Amazon or use the Alexa app to access and delete their log of voice recordings. This puts the Echo Show 5 in between the regular Show and Echo Spot, meaning it should be a good fit for people that want the full Show experience in a more compact form factor.

Amazon's move also comes as other technology giants make a point of touting their own efforts to safeguard user data.
