Now that Indy 500 driver matchups are available at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, here's how I'm taking advantage right now. Huge crowds no longer jam the grandstands to watch qualifying or Carb Day, and the economics of racing and sponsorship has pared down the entry list. Technology has revolutionized IndyCar racing. His kiss of the driver in victory lane is one of the most iconic in the history of the race.

His rumoured replacement is Rossi, but Pagenaud won on the road course two weeks ago, won the pole to start the Indy 500 and now has given his boss a victory in the only race Penske truly cares about. His previous best came past year when Daly finished all but one lap and wound up 21st.

Alonso was pipped for a place on the grid by underdog Kyle Kaiser, the 23-year-old Juncos Racing driver claiming the 33rd and final place on the grid from the Spaniard with an average speed of 227.372 miles per hour, fractionally ahead of Alonso's 227.353. Both were in awe as they surveyed the surroundings and mass of people at IMS.

"It's a big missed opportunity".

"He has a talent", owner Richard Childress said. "So it says: 'This is complicated, this is hard'".

He was young and ambitious and ready to conquer the racing world.

Rossi's drive was once again brilliant - he drove from the back to finish fourth previous year and he won on fuel mileage in the 100th running of the race. The sequence of pit stops also saw Helio Castroneves clash with James Davison on pit lane, the three-time Indy 500 victor earning a drive-through penalty after spinning the Dale Coyne Racing vehicle.

Row 4: Inside: Marco Andretti; Middle: Conor Daly; Outside: Helio Castoneves: 3-time Indy 500 victor in 2001, 2002, & 2009. Four years later, he was back at the Brickyard as a team owner. Josef Newgarden is in Row 2, defending victor Will Power is in Row 3 and three-time victor Helio Castroneves is in Row 4.

The 103rd running of the 500 is especially rich on story lines.

Simon Pagenaud has the pole while Ed Carpenter and Spencer Pigot will also start in Row 1 as the No. 2 and No. 3 qualifiers, respectively. The timing of the caution was unfortunate for those yet to stop, including Scott Dixon and his Ganassi team mate Felix Rosenqvist, as well as for Dale Coyne's rookie driver Santino Ferrucci.

Herta was the first driver out of the race.

"Horsepower, that's unfortunate the way it is", said Rossi, who was in a Honda for Andretti Autosport. It would be the big cherry on top if we were able to bookend 50 years. So why be inconspicuous when you can just go up to people and be like "hey, you're pretty rad"? "We'll try to do our best to honor him".

"This is my favorite race of the season and favorite track", Castroneves said.

Chip Ganassi Racing also has been quiet.

In addition to Herta, there are five other rookies. And, as he points out, there is no telling how Race Control may react, since the race can be called as final at any point past the halfway mark or, if the weather forecast looks more promising later on in the day, it can be restarted once the track is dry. As the Californian went to pass Oriol Servia, who was a lap down in his No. 77 Honda, he was blocked and almost slammed into the wall. "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" has always been televised by ABC, but NBC outbid the outlet for this year's installment.

"Only a few guys have done that". "The milk motivated me". Do you want to answer that question for me? "I never expected to be in this position, but I certainly was trying to make it as hard as I could".
