States reporting measles cases this year are Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennessee, and Washington.

"None of the patients developed measles symptoms and the incubation period is now over", said Public Health Division Administrator Cheryle Becker.

Those with measles can potentially infect up to 15 others if they are not immune and parents should also check their child has had the appropriate MMR vaccine.

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention says the first confirmed case of measles in the state since 2017 involves a vaccinated child who has recovered from the disease. Officials say adults born between 1957 and 1989 might need a second dose of the vaccine. NY state has seen the most cases with 75. According to the public health agency, tthose who should be concerned include people who have not been vaccinated, pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals.

The US is going through its worst measles outbreak in decades, caused in part by people travelling and spreading the virus in unvaccinated communities.

Children 12 months of age and older should receive two doses of MMR vaccine separated by at least 28 days. The numbers of cases occurring in United States residents is also high, at 98%.

Although the virus was eliminated from the country in 2000, meaning the disease was no longer a constant presence, outbreaks still happen via travelers coming from countries where measles is still common, according to the CDC.

Measles is especially risky for children who can develop pneumonia, intellectual disabilities, or go deaf if they contract the disease. As per USA media reports, the officials asked eight people suffering from measles to cancel their flights.

Experts warn that the outbreak is not over as the number of cases approaches the 1994 total of 958.

Cetron said the best way to for anyone to protect themselves and others from measles while traveling or any time is to get an MMR vaccine. Mumps cases tend to increase every 3 years in environments with close mixing such as festivals and universities.

The initial symptoms develop 14 to 21 days after a person is infected.
