He was strong all month, and I think when we had to execute, there was certainly one guy that was going to get on the pole, and that was Simon. Fernley, former Force India deputy principal, was only contracted until the 2019 Indy500.

"Last but not least, I want to thank this man here on my left, who-and I want to apologize to you, as well, because we didn't give you a vehicle that was fast enough".

Alonso wants to complete the so-called Triple Crown, a feat only previously achieved by the late Briton Graham Hill, by adding Indy to his Le Mans 24 Hours and Monaco Grand Prix successes.

Things continued to sour when the team repeatedly lost test time due to various malfunctions: the first circuit of the Speedway oval in April came to a powerless end amid electrical problems (speculated to be a failed battery).

The final 90-minute practice will take place during Carb Day on Friday afternoon.

The vehicle struggled to run on the first day of practice because of electrical problems. Power was second with 94 laps in the No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet, with Pagenaud and Newgarden close behind at 88 laps apiece. But when he went out, his auto suffered a bad vibration that brought him back to the pits.

McLaren's poor showing is one of the biggest failures in Indy 500 history.

The new setup and assistance from other teams indeed got the auto up to speed, but Alonso was knocked from the field by 23-year-old Kyle Kaiser of tiny Juncos Racing.

Three drivers will succeed in doing so while three drivers will fail to do so.

Saturday during qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway - which ranks drivers based on the fastest four-lap averages - Hinchcliffe found his No. 5 Honda almost upside down on his second lap around.

After further struggles come the weekend, McLaren were moved to seek help from IndyCar's biggest names ahead of the last nine shootout, taking set-up and parts from Penske and Andretti respectively. As long as you don't lift, it's more or less the speed of the auto that puts you in one position or another - or the time of the day.

Then he tried five times on Saturday to qualify, puncturing a tyre on the first attempt. We were not quick enough, simple.

For Sunday, McLaren sought help from the leading Andretti and Penske teams to set up the vehicle, to no avail. I think we're really getting there. The conditions changed a little bit, but we extracted what we needed to out of the auto.

Mann didn't qualify for the race in 2018. This is one of the toughest challenges in racing.

He would, however, appear at a post-session press conference alongside the boss of McLaren's Indy 500 program, Gil de Ferran. "You drove like the champion that we know you are", de Ferran said remorsefully.

Dale Coyne's crew members scrambled to fix an electrical problem on the vehicle of James Davison, and Marcus Ericsson's right-side tires tapped the outside wall between the third and fourth turns when traffic forced the rookie to take an unusually high racing line.

"It is very painful. I think I was like last on Fast Friday a year ago". "Do we buy him a seat?" We will deal with them this week. That put him in a group of six drivers vying for the final three positions in the 33-car starting lineup in Sunday's "Last Row Shootout".
