Britain's Labour launches European Union vote campaign warning of 'Trump Brexit'

"But she hopes Parliament will agree to a Brexit plan before MEPs start their session in July", May's spokesperson was quoted by Xinhua as saying.

"We need an awkward negotiator in order to get a good deal because at the moment what we're faced with is either a bad deal or remaining, and I think that's just so unfortunate", she said.

So far, she has failed to overcome resistance within her party to the deal she agreed with the European Union previous year.

Theresa May will make her only significant contribution to the Tories' European parliamentary election campaign late next week as the party appeals to its most loyal supporters to avoid a catastrophic defeat.

She is immune from a leadership contest until December after surviving one previous year.

The announcement means a cross-party compromise on Brexit in talks between Labour and the Conservatives is now unlikely before voters go to the polls. The deadline to register for the European Union elections was Tuesday.

Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee of Tory backbenchers, is understood to have made clear their frustration last night.

Earlier on Wednesday, May was confronted in the House of Commons by a Brexit-backing Conservative MP, Andrea Jenkyns, who said: "The public no longer trust her to run Brexit negotiations". "If it were an issue about me and the way I vote, we would already have left the European Union".

"It is of concern to me that our party's leaflet has failed to include that we will leave the customs union and the single market to ensure we can have an independent trade policy".

The veteran Labour leader said the fledgling party founded by anti-EU firebrand Nigel Farage supported leaving the bloc with no deal, which would result in "an economic shock threatening entire industries".

The EU agreed to delay Brexit to allow British politicians to try to agree a way to leave that minimises the impact of the split.

It can leave the bloc earlier, but if the United Kingdom has not left by the 23 May, it is legally obliged to take part in the EU-wide poll and to send MEPs to Brussels.
