The US and Iran are both important strategic partners for Iraq.

A leak from Britain's National Security Council last month suggested the government in London is planning a limited role for Huawei in its 5G network.

"We don't believe you can have those technologies in your systems and still have a trusted network", Pompeo said in an interview with Sky News on Wednesday.

The culture secretary, Jeremy Wright, separately said it was still possible the roll-out of 5G networks in Britain could be delayed by a review into telecoms equipment.

"Secretary Pompeo is pleased to announce that the United States intends, after six decades, to reestablish a permanent Department of State presence in Greenland, and we will work together with Congress and Denmark to make this happen as soon as possible", she continued. With respect to 5G, we continue to have technical discussions, we're making our views very well known.

The top American diplomat's unannounced trip to the Iraqi capital began and ended after nightfall under heavy security following the abrupt cancellation of a visit to Germany.

The US secretary of state said he and officials discussed how to defeat the remaining pockets of ISIS in the country and foreign terrorist fighters being held in detention camps.

In the latest USA move, the Pentagon said it was sending several massive, nuclear-capable B-52s to the region. He wished the United Kingdom "godspeed" in reaching a decision, adding the U.S. would back whatever conclusion was finally reached.

Pompeo, whose trip to Iraq is his second this year, said he spoke at length about Iran's influence with militias. Pompeo asked, painting a fearsome picture of what could happen if the United Kingdom went "wobbly" on China.

"In China, we face a new kind of challenge; an authoritarian regime that's integrated economically into the West in ways that the Soviet Union never was", Pompeo said.

It also comes hours after Iran said it would announce on Wednesday on reducing its commitments to the nuclear deal or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed in 2015.

He travelled to Baghdad and Arbil in January, also unannounced, to reassure Washington's Kurdish allies after the U.S. announced it would withdraw its troops from Syria.

Last year, President Trump withdrew the United States from the multinational accord created to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Pompeo also said it was "disgusting" to see political leaders supporting Nicolas Maduro when he was asked about Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's alleged backing for the authoritarian Venezuelan president.
