Members of President Donald Trump's inner circle are frustrated that the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenaed Donald Trump Jr., multiple sources tell CNN.

The president did not say whether his son should fight the subpoena but he did say that he had previously testified "for a massive amount of time".

"My son is a good person", Trump said, claiming that his son was "totally exonerated" by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) announced on Wednesday that he has subpoenaed Donald appear before the committee he chairs as part of its continuing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

In a series of remarks to reporters Thursday, Blumenthal noted that the younger Trump lied to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017 when asked about the Trump Tower meeting.

Led by Republican chairman Richard Burr, the intelligence panel is the only committee in the Republican-controlled Senate that has been conducting a bipartisan investigation into allegations of Russian interference in US politics.

Trump also said that he would leave whether Mueller would be allowed to testify to Congress up to Attorney General William Barr. The person, who requested anonymity to discuss the internal negotiations, said members had been regularly briefed on communications with Trump Jr. "It's time to move on & start focusing on issues that matter to Americans".

"Endless investigations_by either party_won't change the fact that there was NO collusion".

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took to the Senate floor with a speech seeking to close the door on the investigations, declaring "case closed". Burr and the top Democrat on the committee, Virginia Sen.

The immediate backlash from Republican lawmakers has fortified Trump Jr.'s allies, they say, and will continue to push for more of them to come out against the move.

"Don continues to cooperate by producing documents and is willing to answer written questions, but no lawyer would ever agree to have their client participate in what is an obvious PR stunt from a so-called Republican senator to cowardly stand up to his boss Mark Warner and the rest of the resistance Democrats on the committee", the source said.
