Samsung introduces 64-megapixel image sensor for smartphones

The world's biggest smartphone vendor has focused on improving camera function across its range of smartphones, as more people consider picture quality to be one of the most important features when buying new devices, Yonhap news agency reported. The Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei P30, and the Huawei P30 Pro all feature 40MP sensors.

Yongin Park, Executive Vice President of Samsung's sensor business, noted that smartphones have "become the main instrument for recording and sharing our everyday moments".

The company is actually debuting two ISOCELL products today, the 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM2 and the 64MP ISOCELL Bright GW1.

After its 48MP ISOCEL Bright GM1 imaging sensor which has now found its way into a number of smartphones of all price brackets, Korean major Samsung has today announced a new generation imaging sensor that has the potential of changing the 48MP trend. Under normal light, the camera will just capture 64-megapixel images. However, with the advent of effective 4-in-1 pixel binning, cameras can deliver high resolution photos in daylight, and pixel binned lower resolution photos in low light that benefit from better noise reduction, dynamic range, and per-pixel detail. Samsung, however, uses a remosaic algorithm to interpret more information for the full field.

It also supports real-time high dynamic range (HDR) of up to 100-decibels (dB) that provides richer hues. According to Samsung, this is about 60 decibels for most image sensors and 120 decibels for the human eye. Can we see this in Galaxy Note10?

The sensors also feature Dual Conversion Gain, which allows the sensor to take in light information in bright conditions up to its saturation point.

On the video front, the new camera will be able to record 480 frames-per-second at 1080p Full HD resolution.

The ISOCELL Bright GM2, on the other hand, is a 48MP sensor that also adopts Tetracell technology in low lighting as well as a remosaic algorithm in well-lit settings, and it's said to bring "highly detailed" photos with "natural and vivid colors".
