West on Today: Churchill `Greedy,' No Preakness, We'll Appeal - TDN

West also said he would file an official appeal on Monday, two days after his horse was disqualified and Country House was named Kentucky Derby victor.

Maximum Security was disqualified for a maneuver that impeded several other riders and marked the first time in the Derby's 145-history that a victor was disqualified for a race infraction. That because creepy blowhard actor James Woods got put in Twitter Jail for doing stuff like posting dogwhistle-y "The Irish Were Slaves Too" memes and straight-up advocating for violence against minorities, officials at a horse race had to... follow the pre-established rules of horse racing?

Now, Maximum Security's owner, Gary West, plans to appeal the decision with Kentucky's state racing commission.

After an objection and a nail-biting 20-minute review by race stewards, he was ruled to have interfered with War of Will and other horses - a move ultimately judged to have significantly affected the outcome of the race.

West said he did see Maximum Security, who led the race from almost start to finish, move over several lanes but felt such contact was inevitable given the number of horses in the Derby. The stewards agreed with the objection and gave the win to Country House, the 65-1 long shot who now has a chance at the Triple Crown. The ostensible victor, Maximum Security, was accused of drifting into another horse's path on the muddy track, causing an illegal impediment.

"He said, 'We've been doing this for 40 years and in 22 minutes they took it all away from us. Mr". That changed as Maximum Security was knocked down to 17th for interfering with the path of two other horses, which left 65-to-1 Country House as the victor of the first leg of the Triple Crown in stunning fashion.

"Having the Derby victor, you're pretty much forced to go into the Preakness", Mott said to reporters outside his barn at Churchill Downs.

The only other disqualification in the Derby occurred long after the race in 1968.

The 145th running of the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown, was held on a sloppy Churchill Downs track. I thought our horses ran really well, and being second, I said, 'Well, there's no real pressure to go to the Preakness'. "Every Kentucky Derby you could shut down two, three, four horses because it's like a rodeo out there".

"Both horses are very well-suited for the Belmont, but now we got to rethink that, and certainly probably for Country House".

Only 13 horses have won the Triple Crown, starting with Sir Barton in 1919, making it a highly sought-after prize.

There's not going to be a rematch at The Preakness Stakes.

Critics of the disqualification include US President Donald Trump, who said the decision was "not a good one". Aside from value of the bets themselves, total winnings on Maximum Security would have amounted to $42 million, and potentially much higher, the Action Network reported.
