During the final practice for Azerbaijan's inaugural European Grand Prix race in 2016, Williams team driver Valitteri Bottas damaged his vehicle in the pitlane when he hit a dislodged drain cover.

That's two wins each for the Mercedes drivers now, the point separating them being the one Bottas scored for fastest lap on his way to victory in the first race of the season in Australia. Baku has produced huge drama in recent years and did so again in qualifying but this time the race proved to be closely fought but an uneventful battle at the front. Bottas was modest, but exuded determination, after his victory.

Hamilton stayed with him throughout, as did Vettel, but neither could challenge for the lead. Bottas 2. Hamilton 3.

"That may take us a long time, but it took Frank more than 10 years to do it when he first started in this sport and I'm sure we'll have a lot more stuff thrown our way".

In China Bottas had also taken pole but was beaten off the line by Hamilton.

The chassis has been damaged beyond fix and under FIA regulations, will have to be checked before being allowed to run again so the earliest the British driver will be able to get back on track will be tomorrow in Free Practice 3.

Renault's Daniel Ricciardo was one of four retirements in the race. Without a Safety Car, the quickest route to the finish was a one-stop race with very little strategic variation available. The pair were within centimetres of touching, but the brilliance of both drivers ensured they avoided contact.

20/51 So twenty laps in - Leclerc leads, the Mercs behind him, with Vettel pushing them.

Ferrari did call Leclerc in for a second stop late on, as he had a buffer to the auto behind big enough to take on fresh tyres and challenge for the point on offer for fastest lap, which he successfully gained on the penultimate attempt.

11/51 - Up top, the two Mercedes are well clear on their own.

Five-times world champion and overall leader Lewis Hamilton, victor in Baku past year for Mercedes, did not seem to mind the lack of action, however. However, the Italian team's chances were slashed when Charles Leclerc crashed into the barriers in Q2 and then faded completely when Sebastian Vettel was 0.3s slower than the two Mercedes in Q3.

Leclerc finished nearly a minute adrift of Verstappen after a second pitstop for another set of fresh soft tyres, which let him steal the fastest lap bonus point from Bottas. He swiftly dealt with Gasly but there was too much to do and he had to settle for fifth although he secured the fastest lap point at the death.

Vettel ended up a lonely third, never quite close enough to attack a Mercedes but equally not under threat from Verstappen at the end.

42/51 - Inside the final nine laps now: 1.
