Reuters was not immediately able to verify the origins of the video, which Weibo users said was taken in Shanghai. Smoke initially comes out from under the front wheel wells, followed by what appears to be an explosion of flames from under the front of the vehicle. China's government authority, the State Administration for Market Regulation, recalled more than 130,000 cars past year and is calling for more oversight on the quality of electrified vehicles.

The video, which has not been verified by the BBC, showed a stationary vehicle erupting into flames in a parking lot.

The video showed smoke rising from a parked, white vehicle and seconds later it bursts into flames.

"After learning about the incident in Shanghai, we dispatched a team to the scene last night as soon as possible", Tesla wrote in a statement on the Chinese social media site Weibo. "From what we know now, no one was harmed", the company was quoted as saying by the source. We are actively liasing with the relevant departments and cooperating with the verification of the situation.

It is the latest incident to hit Tesla this year, just as it is stepping up its presence in China. News of the car's spontaneous combustion spread on social media, complete with CCTV footage from the parking garage.

In March, Tesla was also on the receiving end of a labelling mix-up at Shanghai customs that led to a temporary suspension of clearance for a batch of Model 3 cars.

"One lesson I learnt from the Shanghai self-exploding Tesla: Don't park your auto next to a Tesla", said one commentator.
