Steve Yzerman's 10 greatest moments with Red Wings - so far

Holland has been the Red Wings general manager since 1997.

The Detroit Red Wings have scheduled a news conference on Friday afternoon where - according to multiple media reports - it is expected the team will name former captain Steve Yzerman as their new general manager.

On Sept. 11, 2018, with one year remaining on his contract, Yzerman announced his resignation as the Tampa Bay Lightning general manager.

After Tampa was eliminated in the first round earlier this week by Columbus, it appears to have changed the timeline for Yzerman. The people say Ken Holland will become the team's senior vice president after being its general manager for two-plus decades. During Yzerman's eight seasons as GM, the Lightning made the Eastern Conference Final four times and advanced to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015, when they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Yzerman, a three-time Stanley Cup victor, went into management immediately after retiring and Holland was his mentor in the front office. Steve Yzerman has re-joined the Detroit Red Wings. "Steve has produced tremendous results as a General Manager in the National Hockey League, as well as an executive in global competition".

Yzerman's return will be heralded in Detroit, and now he'll face more pressure as a front office member than he ever has.

Yzerman, who served as captain of the Red Wings for 20 years, is one of the greatest to have ever worn the Winged Wheel. He had 1,755 points (692 goals, 1,063 assists) in 1,514 games through 22 National Hockey League seasons.

"This is a truly exciting day for the Detroit Red Wings, we are thrilled to welcome Steve Yzerman back to Hockeytown", said Ilitch. His career ended with 1,755 regular-season points, a total that led all active players when he retired and trailed just five in National Hockey League history.
