Defeat to Arsenal- the last Premier League game before the Norwegian was given the job on a permanent basis - on March 10, however, was the first in a run of five defeats in seven games, the latest of the side in the second leg of its Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona on Tuesday.

"I've said all along this isn't going to change overnight and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level of Barcelona and other teams".

Several United players were found wanting in the return leg and Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that his side was several levels below Barcelona.

Pogba plundered nine goals, while Lukaku - after an admittedly slow start under Solskjaer - scored braces in consecutive games against Crystal Palace, Southampton and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, certain United supporters seemed to agree with Neville's line of thinking, and admitted that even with their best starting eleven on the pitch, they would struggle to beat City, and so it made ideal sense for Solskjaer to rotate his players around.

You can't pick and choose when you want to play games of football because somewhere along the line it'll come back and bite you.

"We've got good players to work with and at the moment we've done really well to get to the quarters and challenge for top four, but we've got a rebuilding job". It's a big week and we have to get ready for that week because (they are) three big games. "It starts with the coaches and players, and with one or two additions".

How much does United need to spend in the offseason to build a squad capable for challenging for the big titles?

Paul Pogba could be the next Manchester United captain if he remains committed to the club according to Andy Mitten, the editor of United We Stand.

"We are working to identify individuals involved and we will take the strongest possible action we can against them". Center backs Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are still there, too, eight years after being members of the United team that lost 2-1 to Basel to get eliminated from the group stage of the Champions League.
