Sen. Bernie Sanders has accused a leading liberal think tank, founded and run by longtime Hillary Clinton allies, of orchestrating attacks on him and two other 2020 Democratic presidential candidates.

The returns show that the couple earned almost $2.8 million in the three years since Sanders' first presidential campaign catapulted him to national political prominence. Sanders recently revealed that his income from book sales in the aftermath of that race had made him a millionaire. That year, their adjusted gross income was $1,062,626, and they paid a total of $372,368 in taxes at a 35 percent tax rate. "If I make a lot of money, you make a lot of money, that is what I believe", said Sanders. Baier added that MacCallum also is not running for president. But he maintains that his wealth has not changed his stance that richer Americans should shoulder more of the tax burden.

The filings show that Sanders, who throughout his career has called for an economy and government that works for everyone and not just the 1 percent, is among the top 1 percent of earners in the US.

Here's a closer review of his 2014 tax return so you can compare it to his more recent tax returns.

The interest in presidential contenders and their taxes has jumped since Republican President Donald Trump shattered decades of tradition during the 2016 campaign by refusing to release his returns - a stance he has continued since entering the White House. They also had a business income of $4,900.

Tax returns have become a hot topic in the 2020 presidential campaign - on both sides of the aisle.

Bernie and Jane Sanders have three homes, one in Burlington, a second in Washington and a third, on a Vermont lake front.

Former New Hampshire Democratic Party chair Kathy Sullivan said that while she does not see a problem with Sanders' financial status squaring with his commitment to curbing income inequality, she was struck by the way he handled questions about his wealth.

The accusations were prompted by an article and video published by one of CAP's projects, ThinkProgress, which claimed Sanders is a millionaire but wishes to downplay his finances because it's "very off-brand and embarrassing". But only six - Sanders, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, former Congressman Beto O'Rourke, Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard, and Andrew Yang, a former tech executive - are relying chiefly on those small-dollar donors.

Senator Amy Klobuchar released 12 years of tax returns, showing that she and husband earned about $292,000 in 2017.

Warren released 10 years of her tax returns last year and followed with an 11th year of released returns last week. "I know trillion is kind of hard to get your arms around, but when you bring it down per taxpayer, we are talking more than a $20,000 increase in taxes".
