Monfries, a journalism student, had been set to graduate in May and was allegedly participating in a rite of passage many Fordham University students undertake prior to graduating when she fell on Sunday morning.

"It is with great sadness that I report that Sydney Monfries, a senior at Fordham, died today after sustaining a fall inside the Keating Clock Tower in the early hours of the morning", he said. "And they were like trying to get good views of the city", student Antonia Greene told CBS New York.

"The student apparently climbed into the clock tower with friends", Fordham spokesman Bob Howe said.

The senior continued, "I think they were posting on Instagram when it happened".

University bosses are now investigating to find out how the group gained access to the tower.

She was taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

"There are no words sufficient to describe the loss of someone so young and full of promise - and mere weeks from graduation", Mr McShane wrote in his letter.

The school will award Monfries a posthumous bachelor's degree.

"I know you join me in keeping Sydney, and her family and loved ones, in your thoughts and prayers", Father McShane also said, reported the New York Times.

Lili Huang, a 21-year-old senior studying communications, told the outlet that climbing the tower has become somewhat of a rite of passage for Fordham students.

When the police arrived at the scene, officers were forced to carry out a high-angle rescue after finding Sydney lying on the ground inside the tower with trauma to her head and body, it is reported.

"They're unlocked at night when they're cleaning", the student claimed.

"There's the three things you have to do at Fordham", said Lili Huang, a 21-year-old, told the Times. "You have to go into the tunnels underground and you have to go into the bell tower". She posted a video from the top on Snapchat early Sunday, the newspaper reports. "I, personally, never heard about that".

Monfries, who was from Portland, Ore., was a senior at Rose Hill due to graduate in May. Her family has been notified but her name was not yet released.
