Magic Johnson stepping down as Lakers president of basketball operations

"I want to go back to being who I was before taking this job". We're halfway there with LeBron coming (last summer).

"Do I think Rob is the right GM?" Combining that with the uncertainty in the front office could mean that the Lakers miss out again.

Although Bryant has stated multiple times that he doesn't want to work in basketball operations, there is also the Lakers myth-making that cast him as the mastermind behind Jeanie Buss finally deciding to fire her brother Jim.

"I want to go back to having fun", Johnson said before fighting off tears. "I had more fun on the other side than on this side..." "She'll be talking to me, and I'll be staring into space, thinking about a play". I think that, um, she gave me full power to do what I wanted to do.

"I'm a free bird, and I can't be handcuffed", he said.

Together, Johnson and Pelinka helped put the Lakers in position to sign James previous year while still preserving salary cap space for another max-contract player in 2019 free agency.

Johnson, who announced he was HIV positive in 1991, said that his health is "wonderful" and was not a factor in his decision. "I didn't like that".

The news left a lot of things to talk about. It was not clear to which incidents Johnson was referring. I thought about Dwyane Wade retiring tomorrow and I can't even tweet it out or be there.

"No anxiety. But call me later tonight and the answer might be different", Walton said.

"(On Wednesday) I would have to affect somebody's livelihood and their life", Johnson said.

"I will always defer to Magic", Buss said.

The Lakers end the 2018-19 campaign with a 37-45 record, missing the playoffs for a sixth consecutive year. As far as we know, that did not happen, and James seemingly made an easy transition from Cleveland to Los Angeles without a series of pitches from the teams Smith had mentioned.
