"Paul is looking forward to tomorrow", Solskjaer told reporters ahead of United's quarter final clash with Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Pique, who spent four years at United as a youngster, returns to Old Trafford this week for the first time since moving back to Barca in 2008.

"It's something to relish, I think", the United centre-back said. "We players are all itching to be on that field and show what we can do". In the second half they scored and could have scored more.

The French coach has made no secret of his admiration for the Manchester United midfielder and confirmed that he would be welcomed with open arms at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The turnaround in Paris in the last round was built on an impressive display from Chris Smalling, who kept Kylian Mbappe quiet during the 3-1 win. "We have to be switched on from the first minute until the last".

Despite their lack of a recent league title, Pique still believes United are the team to beat in the Premier League.

"Obviously, teams have ups and downs and moments of transition but they're the biggest team in England". The period of Sir Alex Ferguson was the best one, but they will continue to be a big side. Let us know in the comments section below.

"I don't want to compare this season with other years".

"I was here from 17 to 21, I had my first experience as a professional, playing games with great names and I also had some insane times here". I lived here on my own and you learn a lot that way. "It's a special game for me".

Pique was also briefly a team-mate of current United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, playing alongside him for three seasons before the Norwegian's retirement in 2007.

"I remember Ole as a great team mate, I was 17 and he was a veteran and for sure he helped me adapt to the club, to the country and to the city", Pique added.

One of Pique's team-mates during his time at United was Solskjaer and the former Spain global says he was instrumental in helping him settle into life at the club.
