Salah ended his 572-minute goal drought in the Premier League and finally got his 50th Premier League goal with a superb individual effort.

Liverpool FC manager Jurgen Klopp should consider signing Toby Alderweireld in the summer to partner Virgil van Dijk, Steve Nicol says.

Naby Keita controversially cancelled out Shane Long's opener after Salah was wrongly judged onside in the build up to Liverpool's first-half equaliser.

Mohamed Salah tallied his first goal in seven games with a scintillating run from inside his own half.

The league leaders also needed late goals to beat Fulham and Tottenham in their last two games, but they refuse to give up the chase of a City side eyeing history with a quadruple of trophies.

"It was a must-win (game), we knew that, so it's a big result for us going forward".

This title race is going to go down to the wire and Salah getting back in his old scoring habits can only be a good thing.

"After nine games [without scoring], I'm very happy to score a goal to help the team", the Egypt global told Sky Sports.

Once Milner and Henderson were introduced in the 59th minute, Liverpool suddenly turned their play up a notch.

The midfielder has been at Anfield for eight seasons, making more than 300 appearances for the club.

"The season is intense for everyone", Klopp said.

The victory lifted Liverpool to 82 points from 33 games, with City on 80 from 32, while Southampton remained five points above the relegation zone. Alexander-Arnold struggled to contain the Saints' advances and he came second best in his individual battle against Nathan Redmond, which might explain his substitution with 30 minutes left to play.

"I think the first half was hard because we made it hard", the No.4, who captained the side from the start, told post-match. "I thought we showed great character in the first half", Henderson told Sky Sports. "It was really big for us".

However, their goal difference is still inferior to second placed Manchester City, as the Citizens have scored 83 goals, while Liverpool have netted on just 75 occasions.

"After nine games I'm happy and proud, but the team and three points is most important".

He took his shirt off and celebrated wildly in front of the travelling Liverpool supporters, and the goal was followed by a clincher from substitute Henderson minutes later.
