American Jewish groups have roundly condemned Trump's comments.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham says he wants the United States to enter into a mutual defense agreement with Israel to tell the world that "an attack against Israel would be considered an attack against the United States".

Trump has teased the long-promised US peace proposal as the "deal of the century", but it will undoubtedly be as Netanyahu-sided as everything else the Trump administration has done when it comes to Israel.

"'How do you like the idea of me recognizing exactly what we're discussing?'" said Trump, recounting the conversation. Netanyahu portrayed the US policy shifts on Jerusalem and the Golan Heights as his achievements, saying he had managed to persuade Trump to take these steps.

Much of Trump's speech on Saturday was standard campaign-rally fare, with the president mocking asylum seekers, threatening to close the US border with Mexico, attacking the Green New Deal plan to combat climate change and boasting about his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Moving away from Israeli issues, Trump called the asylum program "a scam". Some of the roughest people you've ever seen.

He tells members of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas: "We don't love the fact that he's got tattoos on his face".

Attendees wear "Trump" yarmulkes before U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at an annual meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition, Saturday, April 6, 2019, in Las Vegas.

Trump made the same mistake last week, when he said his father was born in Germany, confusing his father with his grandfather, while it was his grandfather, Friedrich Trump who was born in Germany.

Asked by Channel 12 about annexing Israeli settlements in the West Bank, he said that "we're on the way" and that "the next term (in office) will be fateful".

Shalom Lipner, a former aide to Netanyahu and several other prime ministers and a current analyst at the Atlantic Council, said Netanyahu might well believe the Trump administration could allow him to proceed with annexation.

"Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service", Trump announced in a tweet.

"The right-wing government is in danger as Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid are are ahead of us at the moment by four-five seats,"Netanyahu said".

Speaking at the Republican Jewish Coalition gathering in Las Vegas, Trump said he made the snap decision during a discussion with his top Middle East peace advisers, including the USA ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, and son-in-law Jared Kushner. "This is because Trump's policies and rhetoric are antithetical to Jewish values, and because anti-Semitism has increased to unprecedented levels due to Trump's divisive words, policies, and wilful blindness".
