Although the Orange didn't delve into specifics of the suspension, Howard will at least by sidelined Thursday when Syracuse tips off against Baylor at 9:57 Salt Lake City, Utah.

Syracuse (20-13, 10-8 Atlantic Coast) earned an eight seed in the NCAA Tournament in Salt Lake City as a part of the West Region.

Howard will be held out of the tournament "for an indefinite period of time", Syracuse said, because of "a violation of athletic department policy". "We practiced with the inclination that this would be the case".

Details regarding the nature of Howard's suspension were not shared in the release.

Without Howard, the Orange could continue to use Buddy Boeheim in the starting lineup.

The Syracuse Orange have also stumbled down the stretch, winning just two of their last seven games. I thought the players made a great adjustment.

While there's no concrete information out to suggest why Howard has been suspended, it likely stems from his attempt to injure Duke star Zion Williamson in the ACC Tournament last week.

In addition to Battle, Syracuse's other regular starters, including junior forward Elijah Hughes and sophomore forward Oshae Brissett, will be counted on to pick up the slack. The senior guard poured in 28 points in the team's ACC tournament game against the Duke Blue Devils.

This is the 14th NCAA Tournament appearance for the Lady Bears, who had Final Four appearances in 1992 and 2001 and a Sweet Sixteen trip in 1993.
