ESPN's Josina Anderson also reported Ford would receive a five-year deal for $87.5 million once the trade becomes official.

The Chiefs started this defensive rebuild previous year, when they traded up in the second round to draft defensive end Breeland Speaks. The 6-foot-2 pass-rusher finished his 2018 campaign with 55 tackles, 13 sacks, and seven forced fumbles, earning him his first-career Pro Bowl nod.

Armstead saw a huge progression in his 2018 season, which led to the 49ers picking up his fifth-year option, worth around $9 million. The 49ers need a winning season, and they need to contend with the Rams.

The trade is essentially agreed to - Ford for a 2020 2nd round pick. Obviously San Francisco believes Ford won't have a problem adjusting from a 3-4 defense.

The Kansas City Chiefs settled on an interesting strategy to improve their hapless defense. While there are zero pass-defensive implications if he plays at SAM, if Shanahan shifts him to EDGE, there are some choices which need to be made regarding players now on the roster.

The Chiefs made Ford the No. 23 overall selection in 2014. It's a 4-3 defense with essentially 3-4 personnel.

Namely regarding defensive ends Solomon Thomas and Arik Armstead. Last year, Solomon Thomas mostly started at leo, but he either left the field on passing downs or moved inside to defensive tackle in nickel situations. It remains likely they target the position with their first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft with Ohio State's Nick Bosa and Kentucky's Josh Allen as the favored candidates. He'll step in Day 1 and be the team's top pass rusher.

The 49ers and the Chiefs getting together on a trade hinged on two conditions: the Chiefs wanted a second-round draft pick in return, and the 49ers needed to negotiate a contract extension with Ford.

While the entirety of the 49ers Faithful already be geared up for the unveiling of newly acquired pass-rusher Dee Ford, it seems that he may be more excited than the fans.

So how much will Ford benefit the 49ers?
