American Airlines has flown more than 2.5 million passengers on almost 18,000 flights safely on its Boeing 737 Max 8 fleet since November 2017 when it first began using the aircraft, according to a company statement posted Wednesday.

One Rwandan national, Jackson Musoni, who works with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Darfur, Sudan, was aboard the ill-fated plane and also perished in the accident.

The Lion Air 737 MAX 8 crashed last October also just minutes after take-off, killing 189 people.

"On March 13, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grounded all USA -registered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, including the 8 and 9 variants, as a precautionary measure", American Airlines said in a statement.

Air Canada has about 24 737 Max planes that have been grounded, and was due to take delivery of another 18 or so in 2019.

The FAA says it is assisting the NTSB with the investigation into the crash of Flight 302 and that the grounding of the MAX aircraft will remain in effect until the examination of the flight data and cockpit voice recorders is complete.

Two sources familiar with the matter said crash site investigators found a piece of a stabiliser used to set the airplane's trim that was in an unusual position similar to that of the Lion Air plane at the time of its crash.

Airlines that serve Logan Airport are responding to the FAA's emergency order to ground Boeing 737 Max aircraft following Sunday's deadly Ethiopia Airlines crash in Addis Ababa.

The investigations into both 737 Max crashes are underway, and expected to focus on the automated controls.

On Wednesday, President Trump reversed course and announced that all Boeing 737 Max 8 planes would be grounded.

United Airlines said it has 14 Boeing 737 Max aircraft in a company statement posted Wednesday.

"Currently, we are working with our airline partners to store aircraft here at YYC", said Fiest. According to the report, the pilot asked to turn back only three minutes into the flight.

The BEA has taken charge of the Ethiopian Airlines aircraft's black boxes, but a spokesman said the first analyses could take between half a day and several days, depending on the boxes' condition. Among the major U.S. carriers (IYT), Southwest Airlines (LUV) has placed an order for 280 jets, while American Airlines (AAL) and United Airlines (UAL) have ordered 100 planes each.

"Overall, we view the interruptions from the 737 MAX grounding as a temporary, one-off issue", Spracklin wrote.
