The global strike for climate action, also called "Fridays for Future" is taking place in countries all over the world, including more than 55 cities and towns across Canada, according to the organizer of the Vancouver event, Sustainabiliteens.

"We are only seeing the beginning", Thunberg, now 16, tweeted recently.

From the South Pacific to the edge of the Arctic Circle, students mobilized by word of mouth and social media skipped class Friday to protest what they believe are their governments' failure to take tough action against global warming. The school board said the the schools would not close because of the strike, but that the situation would be reevaluated in the afternoon.

"The people in office now are not going to be here for the true effects of climate change", said Olivia Porrill, of Gardendale, who is a senior at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.

And it is not just the politicians that the young people striking today are taking aim it.

Thunberg's #FridaysForFuture strikes started last fall with solitary protests urging Swedish lawmakers to crack down on the use of fossil fuels, but her refusal to attend school - inspired by American teens who organized for stricter gun laws after a mass shooting at a Florida high school - catalyzed youth climate strikes across the globe.

"If you're panicked right now, good", the Washtenaw International High School student said Friday, March 15 during the Washtenaw County Climate Strike on the University of Michigan Diag. On March 14, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for her activism.

The group is also chanting: "You should be embarrassed that we pulled out of of Paris", a reference to President Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Accord.

Supporting the kids: The 62-year-old wrote on Instagram: "You know the world has changed coz (sic) we caught a train to join #ClimateStrike with the school kids, they were amazing".

The girls are co-hosting the Ottawa event through their new youth-led climate group called The Future is Rising Ottawa.
