John Bolton says Vietnam Summit was 'Unquestionably a Success'

"I don't know one expert on North Korea that thinks anything could have happened to Otto Warmbier without Kim Jon Un knowing about it ahead of time, do you disagree?"

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will visit Russia, according to the press secretary of the Russian president who did not share dates or other details of the trip.

"He went from that isolation -saw no light of day outside of the borders of North Korea- to now this global player, certainly in the region and that gave him stature for him to walk in and do what he did in those hearings", Rogers said.

But U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton appeared on several Sunday morning talk shows to say last week's summit between Trump and Kim was not a failure, even though talks fell apart with no agreements. So I think that that's a stretch.

The group sent out a prayer alert last week amid the Trump-Kim summit and the reports of growing Christian persecution within the country and at the border with China.

The national security advisor said that the next steps weren't clear, but that the US would continue the "maximum pressure campaign", while admitting that North Korea continued to produce nuclear materials.

"Fundamentally, in the case of all three of those countries we've got to pursue American national interests and that involves matters much weightier, much more important than some of these statements by the leaders", Bolton told "Fox News Sunday". "I wasn't able to watch too much because I've been a little bit busy, but I think having a fake hearing like that and having it in the middle of this very important summit is really a awful thing".

Bolton said that Trump's "got a hard line to walk to" in negotiating with North Korea.

"... The president held firm to his view". Kim will be able to portray himself to his people and supporters as the charismatic head of a nuclear-armed power, not an worldwide pariah that starves its citizens so it can build weapons.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, took issue with Bolton's response.

But Bolton said that Trump's view is that he "gave nothing away".

Trump took to Twitter later Sunday afternoon to defend his decision on the military drills, stating that the reason for canceling them was "to save hundreds of millions of dollars for the USA for which we are not reimbursed".

Washington and Seoul announced on Sunday that they will eliminate massive annual springtime military drills and replace them with smaller exercises, in what they called an effort to support diplomacy with North Korea. But his call for partial sanctions relief to encourage nuclear disarmament steps by North Korea has caused disagreements with Washington, which does not want to give up what it sees as its main leverage with the North. "That was my position long before I became President".
