Chuck Schumer, the senior Democrat in the Senate, said he would oppose Barr's confirmation in the final vote. American intelligence agencies and Mueller have said Russian Federation was the source of hacked material released by the anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks during the campaign that was damaging to Democrat Hillary Clinton's presidential effort.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham said, in supporting Barr's nomination, "I think we need a steady hand at the Department of Justice", according to CNN.

Barr promised he would "not allow" Trump's legal counsel's Rudy Giuliani's expressed desire to "edit" the Mueller report before being released.

It's unclear. Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker says the probe is "close to being completed", the first official sign that Mueller's investigation may be wrapping up.

The nomination now heads to the Senate floor, where Republicans have a 53-47 majority over Democrats and Democratic-caucusing independents.

Democrats have raised concerns that he may limit the scope of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in USA elections.

Attorney General nominee Bill Barr departs after meeting with Sen. But he said he could not understand the memo and would vote against Barr's nomination.

In the memo, Barr wrote that Trump could not have obstructed justice by firing former FBI Director James Comey since it was act the president was constitutionally entitled to take.

Barr would replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who was pushed out by Trump a year ago.

"Mr. Barr and I had a detailed discussion on his priorities for the Department of Justice, and on many issues important to Alaska".

All 12 Republicans on the panel voted for Barr, while all 10 Democrats voted against him. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, said Thursday.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, the committee's top Democrat, said that Barr did not commit to providing Mueller's report to Congress, only follow department rules and regulations on what should be public. "I don't know what Bob Mueller is writing", Barr said at his hearing last month. Trump has repeatedly dismissed any collusion between his campaign and Moscow, while slamming the Mueller probe as a "hoax" or "witch hunt".
