It is understood Whittaker started complaining to his coaching staff late on Saturday evening of pain in his abdomen.

Middleweight Champion Robert Whittaker was forced to have 'emergency surgery' following his sudden withdrawal from UFC 234 on Saturday.

While the highly-anticipated bout between Whittaker and Gastelum in Melbourne has now been scrapped, the co-main event between New Zealand excitement machine Israel Adesanya and Brazil's living legend Anderson Silva will now take centre stage.

At this time, there is no word on when the fight between Whittaker and Gastelum will be rescheduled.

He is a heavy favorite going up against the 43-year old Silva, who has not fought in two years, and a victory should catapult the entertaining Style Bender into the main event scene.

Gastelum took to social media to let his fans know what was happening.

Other fights on the UFC 234 main card include Rani Yahya vs. Ricky Simon (Bantamweight), Montana De La Rosa vs. Nadia Kassem (Women Flyweight) and Jim Crute vs. Sam Alvey (Light Heavyweight).

Gastelum wished Whittaker a speedy recovery. Whittaker won a brutal split decision - his second win over Romero in a year.

According to UFC officials (via MMAJunkie) Whittaker came down with a "severe abdominal injury" that will keep the middleweight champion from defending his title tonight.

If not Sonnen, then perhaps a fighter closer to home?
