Ocasio-Cortez: ICE Doesn’t ‘Deserve a Dime’ of Funding

The Republican Study Committee pointed out the dichotomy Thursday, shortly after the New York Democrat launched her sweeping environmental plan aimed at achieving zero-net greenhouse-gas emissions in 10 years.

"It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive", Speaker Pelosi told Politico on Wednesday.

Pelosi announced the plan to form the select committee last November on the same day that the newly elected Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives protested outside of the leader's personal office in Cannon - an early effort in their push for the Green New Deal.

Later in the morning, Pelosi said she had not seen the proposal. She appealed to some of the more progressive members with her speech after retaking the speaker's gavel, saying "we must also face the existential threat of our time: the climate crisis".

Any Democrat running for President who wants to be taken seriously on climate and economic policy needs to back Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal resolution.

Conservatives were also critical of a part of the plan that called for every building in the U.S.to be upgraded or replaced to make them more energy efficient.

Though spearheaded by Ocasio-Cortez, the plan has already been endorsed by at least 60 Democrats in the House and by nine senators, the Washington Post reported, citing congressional Democrat aides. The United Sates must "respect for the right of human mobility", she said before adding, "because it is a right".

"I will not give one dollar to a secretary who does not care about her life and does not care to investigate a child's death", she said to applause.

Ocasio-Cortez had wanted the select committee to be given legislative and subpoena powers but it was not. Use of wind and solar power would be dramatically increased under the plan.

A joint resolution drafted by them and expected to be introduced Thursday sets a goal to meet all power demand in the US through clean, renewable and zero-emission energy sources by 2030.

Which is to say: the Green New Deal framework combines big climate-change-related ideas with a wish list of progressive economic proposals that, taken together, would touch almost every American and overhaul the economy.

But Ocasio-Cortez didn't seem to mind Pelosi's remarks on her flagship climate change proposal, much less calling it by the wrong name. Will all of the expertise that goes into a Green New Deal eventually include proofreaders?

An outline of the proposal, backed by dozens of congressional lawmakers and the climate change activist group Sunrise Movement, was released early Thursday by Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey, Democrat from MA.

The proposal has no chance of gaining support in the Republican-controlled Senate, let alone being signed into law by President Donald Trump, but has become a rallying cry among some liberals and a lightning rod among conservatives.
