Porting a first-person battle royale title like Apex Legends to mobile devices and implementing cross-platform play is going to be easier said than done, though, so we'll see if Electronic Arts announces plans that are more concrete in the near future.

Looking at the numbers, Q3 ending on December 31, 2018, had EA hitting $1.289 billion in net revenue. It's not clear yet whether or not EA will add microtransactions to this mode, as Activision has done for the battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Head of Respawn Vince Zampella posted a tweet that said, "We are also working on more Titanfall for later in the year".

"We think that there is an opportunity to deliver the fast-paced gameplay that is Apex Legends and where that game goes to a big part of the community", he said. "Elsewhere in the business, we're making adjustments to improve execution and we're refocusing R&D".

To date, Battlefield V has sold a healthy 7.3 million copies across all platforms, but that's a million less than EA had indicated in its guidance.

Note that if you do get an invite from within Steam, you'll still need to download the Origin client to download and play Apex Legends.

Apex Legends launched on Origin, PS4 and Xbox One earlier this week to raucous applause: the game fuses battle royale and hero shooter elements to create something interesting and new in the multiplayer shooting space. He also pointed to the game's holiday launch.

Apex Legends came out of nowhere and appears to be a really successful free to play title.

This is something that Battle Royale competitor Fortnite does not have, yet it's the number one requested feature from players.

While this figure is 11 percent up on the 2017 figure, it underlines the extent to which EA is losing ground to competitors like Epic Games which owns Fortnite. As MarketWatch observed, EA shares suffered their worst single day decline in over a decade, plunging 13.3 per cent on weak performance.
