There was dancing in the streets of Manchester (well, that might be stretching it but there were certainly a few sighs of relief) when the news broke that Anthony Martial had signed a new contract that would keep him at Manchester United until June 2024.

"I would like to thank (interim boss) Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) and his coaching staff for their belief in me and for helping me to take my game to the next level".

Martial is enjoying a strong season, having scored eight times in 18 matches after finding himself in and out of the team in the previous two campaigns.

"And they should still continue to do that because you do not know what is going to happen in the next three or four months".

"Cristiano was the best, the way he's changed to now, that's the player you've got to model yourself on and you've got to have more challenges ahead of you".

Mostly deployed in a wide role, Solskjaer has revealed the 23-year-old wants to play centrally - a position now occupied by Marcus Rashford.

Former striker and 1999 treble hero Solskjaer will work to improve Martial's game - a player he believes has the ability to regularly score 20-plus goals per season.

We are still waiting for Martial to go "global" but time is very much on his side.

Interim manager Solskjaer may only be at the club until the end of the season, but he is excited about Martial's future with United, convinced the forward is in the right place to make the most of his potential.

"Well, of course, I speak about my experience at this club, what he can achieve at this club because I think I can achieve a lot", Solskjaer said.

The 23-year-old cost United a whopping £58 million back in 2015 from Monaco and Martial immediately impressed.

"We've not had a proper session since the game - hopefully both of them can get through that", Solskjaer said.

"Of course, as a young lad moving overseas it's not easy, but now he knows he's going to stay here for the coming future and I believe in him, I certainly believe in him". "This is the flawless club for Anthony to progress his development as a top-class forward".

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his side were seen embarking on a private jet at Manchester Airport as they journeyed south for their upcoming Premier League clash.
