Atlanta airport: More than 1 hour of waiting at checkpoints

The checkpoint at Terminal B closed in the afternoon and travelers were told to go through security in other terminals.

The incident doesn't appear to have been related to the partial shutdown of the federal government.

Bilello said the Delta passenger had been "fully cooperative with authorities".

Miami International Airport staff closed one of its six concourses after 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday "as a precaution in case TSA call-outs increased", an airport spokesperson wrote in an email.

Rudy Garcia, president of the union for Dallas TSA employees, said last week that employees who aren't getting paid for their work would likely try to make money elsewhere.

Delta said the passenger on the January 2 flight reported the firearm and was cooperative, according to The Washington Post.

The Department of Homeland Security is among the agencies affected by the partial government shutdown.


CNN points out that in 2015, the acting administrator for the TSA was reassigned to another department after a report concluded that employees "failed to detect explosives and weapons in almost every test that an undercover team conducted at dozens of airports".

Their ranks have now expanded, at least temporarily, to include some of the federal employees working for no pay at Tampa International Airport during the shutdown brought about by the feud over border security between the White House and Congress. TSA did not, however, provide statistics specific to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport - the busiest airport in the world - or for the security checkpoint responsible for the security failure.

TSA administrator David Pekoske said on Friday via Twitter that the agency's screening officers will receive a $500 bonus.

As a show of solidarity, a number of air traffic controllers in Canada have banded together to send pizza to their American counterparts amid payment freeze.
