Baker Mayfield pre-Freddie Kitchens as his OC: 130-of-223 (56.5%), 1,471 yards, 8 TD, 6 INT.

ESPN's Chris Mortenson was first to report the hire.

Kitchens, who joined the Browns last season as the running backs coach after spending the previous 11 years with Arizona, replaced Todd Haley as offensive coordinator on October 29 after Haley and head coach Hue Jackson were fired leading to a dramatic turnaround in the second half of the season that saw the team finish 5-3 over the final 8 games.

The Cleveland Browns are keeping it internal when it comes to their new head coach. They ended the year 5-3 and scored below 20 points just twice - it happened four times in the first eight games under Haley. Kitchens, who was a three-year starting quarterback at Alabama, wasn't afraid to be creative as he used wide receiver Jarvis Landry on running plays and to throw passes, and he got major production from rookie running back Nick Chubb, left tackle Greg Robinson and receiver Breshad Perriman - three players under-utilized by Jackson and Haley. Perhaps more importantly, Kitchens oversaw the successful rookie season of quarterback Baker Mayfield. They (Dorsey) know me well enough. The interim head coach, Gregg Williams, meanwhile, lost out on both the top job and his defensive coordinator job, being fired Wednesday, according to ESPN.

The Cleveland Browns have identified in-house candidate Freddie Kitchens and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski as finalists for their head coaching job, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Kitchens and Williams kept their players focused and motivated following the mid-season coaching change and the Browns went 7-8-1 following an 0-16 season in 2017 under Jackson. "Cleveland and I get along well".

In addition to the Browns deciding to promote Kitchens to head coach, the team has made a decision to move on from Gregg Williams and his defensive staff, per ESPN.
