Santi Cazorla's first La Liga goals since 2012 stunned Real Madrid and stole struggling Villarreal a 2-2 draw at Estadio de la Ceramica.

But the Frenchmen Karim Benzema and Raphael Varane both bagged flashing headers as Real swept back into the lead with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro and Ballon d'Or Luka Modric pulling the strings in midfield.

Real Madrid head coach Santi Solari has blamed the latest injury setback of club-record signing Gareth Bale as the reason for dropping points in their first LaLiga fixture of 2019.

You can rate them below. "We now must focus on another game in three days' time".

The Blues are now fourth in the Premier League table as they prepare for their home clash against Southampton on Wednesday.

"We had the victory in our hand and wanted to kill the game", Solari said.

Villarreal, who have reached the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League in spite of a dire domestic season, clawed their way out of the relegation zone. The way they are playing does not make me feel optimistic'.

"I don't think it was about lacking control, but more a lack of countering and doing them damage in the second half", he said.

The home were creating the chances but lacked that finishing third in the final third as Rweal defended excellently with their back four. But it's true we were lacking clarity in our breaks, and missed players like Gareth who are specialists at that. "We are happy with what the younger players are giving us".

Real Madrid holds the fourth spot in La Liga table with 29 points, eight points adrift of leader Barcelona, a gap that Madrid could narrow to five should it defeat Villarreal in a postponed game due to its successful FIFA Club World Cup campaign.
