Man City Hosts Liverpool in Vital Clash in Premier League Title Race

Attention is about to be shifted to knockout football in an FA Cup third round meeting with Wolves on Monday, but Liverpool will be back in Premier League action away at Brighton on January 12. "It was important we played with courage in our game and we were aggressive in our pressing".

"It was a final for us, because losing today it was nearly over", said Guardiola. We can play better.

The danger wasn't over for City as John Stones' clearance struck the retreating Ederson and was spinning back towards goal, yet the defender was able to re-clear just milliseconds before the ball would have crossed the goalline.

"It's still in Liverpool's hands, but our performance was beyond anything else I've ever witnessed", City captain Vincent Kompany said.

City are not the force they were last season, by any means, and the style of last season's title success was replaced by a more direct, uncompromising approach against Liverpool. Liverpool improved when Fabinho came on but overall City were the better side on the night.

"We went toe to toe with a very aggressive team and we matched them".

Liverpool have not been used to being in this position; being the ones ahead, at the top of the table and the burden that comes with that - the pressure of being leaders and not chasers.

But parity lasted just eight minutes as Sane fired City's victor off the post, leaving Liverpool to come to terms with their first league defeat since May 6.

"There were others moments when we took the ball and accelerated, not immediately passing, because if you can outplay the counter-press every team in the world struggles, even City. We know we can do it", he added.

"We ran a lot and fought a lot and everyone could see how much we wanted to win the game". But in 2013, the Premier League instituted goal-line technology - the same mechanism as tennis' Hawk-Eye system. "This is our way and we want to show we can do it both ways".

City have been tested and come through - they won the title a year ago and contain a core of players who also won the Premier League in 2012 and 2014.

"In the end, we lost it and we take that - it is not the first game we lost in our lives".
