The worldwide airport in Hannover handled 5.87 million passengers a year ago, though it isn't one of Germany's top hubs. Drivers in the past have attempted to trespass secured airport areas previously as well. The incident sparked a major security alert.

Federal police said the driver, who is in his mid-20s, tested positive for amphetamines and cocaine. Police said they couldn't give further information on where he came from because he wasn't carrying an identity card.

Belgium-based journalist Sotiri Dimpinoudis said on Twitter that flights were diverted to other airports while the investigation into the vehicle breach continued.

Air traffic at the airport was paralyzed for more than four hours.

According to Eurocontrol, the airport remains closed until approximately 22:00 UTC. They said that "delays are high" and that a "Zero rate [was] applied for arrivals and departures due to an ongoing security issue on the airfield".

Bomb disposal experts were examining the vehicle. This is commonplace following such an incident.

Airport traffic was suspended at Hannover airport on Saturday after a auto crashed through a barrier onto the runway, police said. The security areas are now vacated, now there is no clearance. Hanover police said in a statement: "Flight operations are now suspended".
