Dame June also played a regular character in Last of the Summer Wine and Edina Monsoon's mother in the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.

The role cemented her image as a "proper" Englishwoman - slightly prim, resolutely middle-class, but always in restrained command - that she's played for much of her career.

In a statement to Press Association, Saunders said: 'It's so tremendously sad to lose June.

Among those paying tribute is June's Absolutely Fabulous co-star Joanna Lumley, who said she was "heartbroken" by the news.

Name anyone in the business, and she worked with them: Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Jimmy Edwards, Frankie Howerd, Dick Emery, Julian Clary - even the cast of Friends.

Comedian Jenny Eclair tweeted simply: "Beautiful, amusing June Whitfield- a friendly Goddess".

David Walliams hailed June's "incredible career" and said the star was "always being brilliant".

Her part in Ab Fab made June Whitfield a cult figure to a new generation of viewers; a position further amplified by her appearance alongside the camp comedian Julian Clary in his decidedly risqué series All Rise (1996 - 97).

She is survived by her actress daughter Suzy Aitchison, her chartered surveyor husband of 46 years died 17 years ago.

The actress died on Friday night, according to multiple reports.

'She will always have a most special place in my heart'.

"If you love doing something, continue with it, that is my philosophy, and I would urge others to do the same".

She also appeared in Carry On films and featured in the U.S. sitcom Friends. "I live in delight", she added.

Writer Jack Monroe remembered working with Dame June for the dramatisation of her first book, A Girl Called Jack, on Radio 4.
