Norway's Prime Minister Erna Solberg has explained how she prematurely broke the news of Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's appointment as Manchester United's caretaker manager several hours before the club issued the formal announcement.

It was buried in the club's online library, but has since been removed from the website.

Solskjaer's staff will be comprised of first-team coach Mike Phelan and Mourinho holdovers Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna, per the statement.

"Manchester United is in my heart and it's brilliant to be coming back in this role", Solskjaer said.

"Ole is a club legend with huge experience, both on the pitch and in coaching roles".

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking the Manchester United job, we look at other former Alex Ferguson players who progressed into management.

After retiring, the Norwegian was appointed as United's reserve-team boss before joining Molde as manager in 2010. "We are happy to lend Ole Gunnar, we wish both him and the club success".

Born in Kristiansund, the Norseman began playing football for his local club, Clausenengen before making a move to top Norwegian club Molde, for whom he scored 31 goals in 38 games.

Jose Mourinho's two-and-a-half year reign was brought to an abrupt end on Tuesday, having overseen the club's worst start to a Premier League season.

As a manager, he had a disastrous eight-month spell in charge at Cardiff City in 2014 before returning to Molde in 2015 and has just signed a new three-year deal until the end of the 2021 season.

And Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is one of the favourites to take over from Mourinho on a permanent basis.

Solskjaer joined United as a player from Molde in 1996 and was part of the team that won the treble of the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup in 1998/99.

"In football you never know what can happen", Solskjaer told Molde's website.

'This is an opportunity I had to take. What matters, really, is how the club goes about moving forward next season. With Molde losing Solskjær until the summer, people are wondering how it will work out.

Following the loss to league leaders Liverpool, Manchester United (26 points) are 19 points adrift of their rivals after 17 matches and 11 behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
