The study repeats several conclusions that Mueller, the intelligence community and the Senate and House intelligence committees had already made - that numerous postings focused on race, that they were primarily to hurt Democrat Hillary Clinton and help Donald Trump, and that the ultimate goal was to sow American division.

Russian agents reached a staggering number of Americans through social media during the 2016 election campaign, and sites like Facebook missed some obvious signs of what was happening, according to a report prepared for the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Following the New Knowledge report, Warner expressed his frustration with United States tech companies and called for stricter regulation of social media.

When asked by CNN's John Berman on "Anderson Cooper 360" if he was surprised by the continued attacks on American elections, Clapper replied, "Absolutely not".

Facebook Inc's Instagram played a much bigger role in Russia's manipulation of U.S. voters than the company has previously discussed, and will be a key Russian tool in the 2020 elections, according to a report commissioned by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

"Facebook and Instagram accounts targeted James Comey after President Trump fired him, and targeted the Robert Mueller investigation".

Examples of the content include one IRA-created account called "Blacktivist", which sent out messages that read: "No lives matter to Hillary Clinton".

The New Knowledge report is one of two reports recently presented to the committee, the other conducted by the University of Oxford in cooperation with digital analytics firm Graphika.

"T$3 he IRA narratives began to actively mock the idea that Russians had interfered in the US election (as described earlier in this report)", it said.

And it notes that spikes in the IRA's advertising and organic activity match up with important dates in US politics, crises and global events.

Facebook posts linked to the IRA "reveal a nuanced and deep knowledge of American culture, media, and influencers in each community the IRA targeted".

Establishment figures of both parties, especially Clinton, were universally panned.
