She would have been crowned by the 2017 victor, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, who is also South African, making their country and for that matter Africa a back-to-back victor of the title.

Catriona Gray from the Philippines claimed the Miss Universe crown for 2018 on Monday, beating contestants from 93 other countries.

Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, nearly succeeded her countrywoman Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters to win the crown, but came second overall.

From the moment she went on stage during the Binibining Pilipinas coronation night in March, it was clear that Catriona wasn't just out to get the Miss Universe Philippines crown - she wanted to represent the Philippines in a very real way through her outfits.

Dubbed as one of pageant's favorite, she managed to snatch a victory from other gorgeous contestants, which this year included the first-ever transgender woman, the candidate from Spain.

After winning she told reporters she would like to expand her work with an organisation in the Philippines that promotes education on HIV and AIDS.

During the 2018 Miss Universe Pageant, Miss Philippines was asked about her opinion on the legalization of marijuana and she said that she was definitely for it, but for medical purposes.

She is a 24-year-old with a Master's in music theory.

Poland, Belgium, Great Britain, Hungary and Ireland qualified from the Europe Region while Curacao, Costa Rica, Canada, Puerto Rico and Jamaica made it from the Americas.

The Philippines is hoping to grab its 4th crown courtesy of Filipino-Australian Catriona Gray.

The emcee for Sunday evening's festivities was comedian and game show host Steve Harvey.

Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green was named as the first runner-up. Valeria Morales was mocked for her silent demeanour and lack of communication by Miss USA, Sarah Rose Summers.

Salvador Panelo, spokesman for President Rodrigo Duterte, said her win would put the country on the world map for its "beauty and elegance". Besides, her iconic three stars and a sun ear cuff did not just added glamour to her overall look, but added a more nationalistic vibe.

Top 3 finalists from left, Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez, Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green, Miss Philippines Catriona Gray.

Congratulations, Catriona! Thank you for not only bringing back the crown to the Philippines, but for also giving our country pride and recognition with how you incorporated our cultures and traditions in your triumphant stint.
