Following the trade, he went 2-0 against the Yankees with a 0.39 ERA in four starts against NY including his win in Game 3 of the ALDS.

Boston earlier reached a $6.25 million, one-year contract with first baseman Steve Pearce, the World Series MVP. The New York Yankees reportedly were interested in Eovaldi but did not want to go past three years on a deal. The Red Sox acquired him for left-handed prospect Jalen Beeks on July 25 and Eovaldi went 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA in Boston.

"What Nate did [in Game 3], that was incredible", Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after Eovaldi's Game 3 late-night loss.

Eovaldi is still on the right side of 30 years old, but banking on him to stay healthy over the course of a four-year deal is certainly a gamble. It was that performance that allowed Boston to reset its bullpen for the final two games of the series and earned Eovaldi considerable respect from his teammates and manager Alex Cora.

Passing a team physical Thursday evening was the final hurdle for Eovaldi, who averaged a career-best 97.2 miles per hour on his fastball last season. Eovaldi has already undergone two Tommy John procedures in his career.

In a flawless world, Boston could have gotten Eovaldi on a cheaper, or shorter deal, but that's not where the market for starting pitching is right now.

Eovaldi is part of a projected starting rotation that includes Chris Sale, David Price, Rick Porcello and Eduardo Rodriguez.

Eovaldi is one of the few free agents from the championship team, giving the 108-win AL East champions a chance to repeat with virtually the same roster. That leaves the club little wiggle room with the threshold for 2019 set at $246 million.

Eovaldi's most recent contracts were one-year deals worth $2 million per year.
